Household trash: residents choose their own hauler

The San Tan Valley area does not have a single municipal trash service. Each household either contracts directly with a private trash company or in many of our subdivisions, the HOA has a direct agreement for trash and recycling. Contact your HOA directly to determine if your dues include trash/recycling services. 

This works the same whether you live inside the Town of San Tan Valley or in the unincorporated area. Incorporation did not change trash service, and the Town has not announced any plan to franchise a single provider.

New residents can ask neighbors which company they use, what they pay, and which day pickup occurs. Rates and schedules vary by company and by neighborhood.  Each trash can is labeled with the name of the provider.

Items your hauler won't take

Regular haulers do not accept every type of waste. For other items, Pinal County directs residents to the disposal options below.

Landfills and transfer stations

These facilities are private businesses, not county-run. Pinal County lists them as a service to residents, but customers deal with each company directly. None of them accept hazardous materials. Call ahead with questions about unusual items.

Free Disposal Days

Pinal County partners with two facilities on free disposal days throughout the year. 2026 dates:

Republic Services Cactus Landfill (8am-12pm): January 3 · April 4 · July 11 · October 3

Waste Connections (6am-11am): January 17 · March 7 · May 9 · September 5 · December 19

Accepted: household trash, food waste, furniture, appliances (documented free of refrigerant), construction debris, wood, paper, metal.

Not accepted: commercial loads, appliances still containing refrigerant, tires, and hazardous materials. Waste Connections also turns away asbestos, medical waste and sharps, pressurized tanks, lead-acid batteries, and used oil.

Dates can change. Call the facility to confirm before hauling a load.

Household hazardous waste

Household hazardous waste includes paint, chemicals, motor oil, antifreeze, gasoline, pesticides, bleach, and ammonia. These items do not belong in regular trash, and the landfills will not accept them.

Illegal dumping: a $500 minimum fine

Proper disposal costs far less than the penalties for dumping.

Under Pinal County ordinance, dumping trash, debris, appliances, junked vehicles, construction waste, dead animals, or soil and rock on public land or someone else's property is criminal littering. The offense is a Class 2 misdemeanor, and rises to Class 1 if it occurs within 50 feet of a highway, beach, or waterway.

The fines are not discretionary. A mandatory minimum of $500 applies to a first offense and $750 to a second or later offense. Each act of dumping counts as a separate offense.

The county also prohibits people from outside Pinal County from bringing waste into county landfills and transfer stations. Those facilities exist for county residents.

A note on desert dumping

Vacant desert land is not a legal dumping site, even when it appears empty. Dumped furniture, tires, and construction debris in the washes and on vacant land is a recurring problem in the San Tan Valley area. It is expensive to clean up, hazardous during monsoon flows, and damaging to property values across the area. Hauling unwanted items to a transfer station costs a fraction of the fine for dumping them.
