Who maintains which road

Road responsibility in the San Tan Valley area is divided among three governments:

The town-county division is still being finalized. The Town of San Tan Valley is taking over road responsibilities in phases, and the exact list of which roads the Town maintains versus Pinal County has not yet been published. We have asked the Town for that list and will update this page the moment we have it. Until then, the practical rule: if you are inside town limits and unsure, call the Town first at 520-216-5702 and staff will route you.

Reporting a road problem

Potholes, damaged signs, debris in the roadway, drainage problems, and washed-out shoulders:

On SR-79 or US-60: ADOT is responsible for state routes.

For a hazard that poses an immediate danger to drivers, call the Sheriff's non-emergency line: 520-866-5111.

Street lights and traffic signals

Inside town limits, street lights and traffic signals belong to the Town and are maintained under a public works contract - report outages to the Town at 520-216-5702. In the unincorporated area, report them to Pinal County Public Works at 520-866-6419.

Speed humps and traffic calming

Requests for speed humps and other traffic-calming measures inside town limits go to the Town Engineer at 520-216-5702. In the unincorporated area, traffic-calming requests go through Pinal County at 520-866-6419.

During monsoon season, never drive into a flooded wash crossing. Arizona's Stupid Motorist Law allows drivers who bypass barricades into flooded roadways to be billed for their rescue.

Working in the road right-of-way

Building a driveway, running a pipe or utility line, or placing anything in a county road easement requires a right-of-way permit from the Pinal County Engineer before work begins. Penalties for unpermitted right-of-way work run $700 per violation, per day. Inside town limits, right-of-way permits are issued by the Town.
