SB1152 FAILED IN THE SENATE 16-14 on May 4th, but the Senate is continuing to try and bring the bill back for a re-vote. WE MUST STOP THIS BILL!
Rep Kern introduced a strike everything amendment to SB1152, that passed the House 32-27-1 and was transmitted to the Senate. This bill MUST be stopped. While the initial plan was to amend HB2546, then HB2339, it ended up on SB1152.
On May 4th, SB 1152, FAILED and even after the Senate adjourned that evening, there was an attempt to reconvene and re-vote on SB1152. It FAILED AGAIN!
Then on Monday, another attempt to RE-VOTE ON SB1152 was initiated, and while the bill hasn't gone to the floor as of May 8th, the Senate is reconvening May 9th and we are confident there will be yet another attempt to RE-VOTE on SB1152.
This amendment would require any approval or authorization of a Transaction Privilege Tax (TPT) assessment by a county, city or town to be held during the fall cycle of even numbered years. It is currently a decision made by local government. No ballot vote is required. Not only would SB1152 require sales tax rates be approved by the voters, it would also mandate that a vote could only happen in the fall of even years.
There may be circumstances when a city or town could not wait two years to go to their electorate on a tax question.
The decisions about the timing of elections are best made at the local level.
The Court of Appeals has already ruled in favor of local control on the issue of candidate elections. We believe they would do the same on this issue.
SB1152 WOULD BE DEVASTATING TO OUR NEW COMMUNITY'S FUTURE
Please tell our legislators that there is NO REASON TO FORCE ANOTHER VOTE on a bill that has already failed, more than once, by signing the petition below.
Anyone who lives in Arizona and is over the age of 18 is welcome to sign.
