American Cancer Society Seeks Volunteers, Relay For Life Teams in San Tan Valley

The American Cancer Society is seeking volunteers and teams for the first Relay For Life® in San Tan Valley. Organizers are holding a meeting at 9:00AM on April 7th, 2012 at the SRP Service Center to engage volunteers in recruiting and assembling teams, seeking community support, coordinating logistics, securing donated refreshments and prizes, planning entertainment and lending their support in any way. The world’s largest grassroots fundraising movement, Relay For Life mobilizes communities throughout the country to celebrate people who have battled cancer, remember loved ones lost, and provide participants with an opportunity to fight back against the disease.

Event helps people stay well, get well, find cures and fight back WHAT – The Relay For Life of San Tan Valley raises funds to fight cancer by hosting this overnight event where individuals and teams camp out with the goal of keeping at least one team member on the track or pathway at all times throughout the evening.  The Relay takes place overnight because cancer never sleeps.  Teams do most of their fundraising prior to the event, but some teams also hold creative fundraisers at their camp sites during Relay.  Relay brings together friends, families, businesses, schools, faith-based groups….people from all walks of life – all aimed at furthering the American Cancer Society’s efforts to save lives.

Superintendent Cecilia Johnson signed letters of intent to play football in college on a day dubbed National Signing Day. It didn’t take four San Tan Foothills seniors long to decide where to continue their academic and athletic careers. On the first signing day Feb. 1, three of the four chose a place close to home and a fourth chose to move on to a different area to continue playing football. All signed letters of intent. Mychael Bruce, arguably the best athlete in the senior class, will attend Valley City State College in North Dakota. Julian Navarette, Tyler Howes and James Leep will all attend Scottsdale Community College.

Every athletic team faces a defining moment in its season. That time is now for Coolidge football. Are the Bears as good as the team that started the season 4-0? Or are they as bad as the team that has yielded 163 points in the last three weeks? The defining moment for Coolidge last season came after the Bears were shellacked 55-0 by Florence. Coolidge outpointed the next three opponents 162-26 and didn’t lose again until the second round of the playoffs. It does not figure to be that easy this season since the Bears have been so banged up physically and the second of their next three opponents is vastly improved San Tan Foothills.

2011 FedEx Cup Champion Bill Haas, 2007 tournament champion Aaron Baddeley and 2009 PGA Championship winner Y.E. Yang are among the last commitments to the 2012 Waste Management Phoenix Open. In addition, 2008 Masters Champion Trevor Immelman and 20-time PGA TOUR winner Davis Love III also committed today to play in next week’s Waste Management Phoenix Open. 2009 US Open Champion Lucas Glover withdrew from the tournament due to a knee injury.

NHL Commissioner Gary Bettman is a year removed from canceling preseason games in the early stages of the league's lockout of its players. Now there are rising television ratings, along with participation in another Winter Olympics and settled ownership in Phoenix and New Jersey. So where does the NHL go from here?

Ryan Fitzpatrick and the Bills' offense have been humming, but they face a stiff test in the Bengals' defense. (Richard Mackson/US Presswire)   Last week: 1-6-1; Season: 11-12-1 What can I say about last week? It was awful. If not for the Rams’ utter incompetence in the red zone and Antonio Gates voiding one of my best bets by not playing, I would have put up the goose egg. If last week’s picks were an NFL quarterback, they’d be Ryan Leaf. Maybe Joey Harrington.
