The Law Enforcement Torch Run (LETR) for Special Olympics began in 1981 when Wichita, Kansas Police Chief Richard LaMunyon saw an urgent need to increase awareness of Special Olympics. He also saw it as an ideal way to involve local law enforcement personnel with the Special Olympics community. Thirty-one years later, that flicker has become a roaring flame of stability for Special Olympic athletes worldwide. In 2008, the Law Enforcement Torch Runs raised $34 million, making it the movement’s largest grass-roots fundraiser and public relations vehicle. Since then, the impact of the Torch Run has only gotten bigger. In 2011, it raised more than $42 million.

On Tuesday, March 25, 2014, the Combs High School Track and Field team competed in a state qualifying track meet. The 31st Annual Barwick Superstition Invitational was held at Apache Junction High School and the Combs team demonstrated a solid performance with several students receiving medals.

The Southeast Valley Church League has opened registration for three adult sports programs this Winter for residents of San Tan Valley, Queen Creek and its surrounding areas. The three leagues will include mens flag football, co-rec volleyball, and mens basketball. Registration for all three leagues is open through Friday, November 5th and games will begin in early December.

Super Bowl XXLIX in Glendale pits the Seattle Seahawks against the New England Patriots following their conference wins on Championship Sunday. The Seahawks became the first defending champion to make the Super Bowl in 10 years.
