FHS trying to get football game resumed

Flagstaff High officials are still trying to finalize a decision about last Friday's suspended game against San Tan Valley Poston Butte.The game was called off with about four minutes remaining in the third quarter. An electrical problem forced officials to suspend the contest before a broken switching cabinet caused a campus-wide blackout at Coconino.
Florence High School Senior Meghan Kuebler took first place in the girls division of the 1st annual Wickenburg Golf Invitational this weekend. Meghan shot a 175 total to finish ahead of runner-up Kasey Golden of Fountain Hills (179) in the two day event held Fri., March 30 and Sat., March 31 at the Wickenburg Country Club. She shot 90 on Friday in tough conditions followed by a 85 on Saturday to take the 36 hole title.
FHS Football Coach George De La Torre has been named 3A All-State Coach of the Year! Congratulations, Coach! Well deserved.
Gonzalo Fernandez-Castano called it the perfect win, even though his final hole Sunday to win the BMW Masters was anything but perfect.
  Walkers will go around the clock in the battle against cancer when the first American Cancer Society Relay For Life® of San Tan Valley gets underway with teams of residents gathering at Combs High School on April 20th, 2012 at 6:00pm. Relay For Life events are held overnight as individuals and teams camp out at an athletic track, park or other gathering area, with the goal of keeping at least one team member on the track or pathway at all times throughout the evening. Teams do most of their fundraising prior to the event, but some teams also hold creative fundraisers at their camp sites during Relay. Relay brings together friends, families, businesses, hospitals, schools, faith-based groups . . . people from all walks of life – all aimed at furthering the American Cancer Society’s efforts to save lives by helping people stay well, by helping them get well, by finding cures and by fighting back.

An ex-pitcher for the Chicago Cubs drowned at Bartlett Lake northeast of Phoenix Sunday, the Maricopa County Sheriff's Office said. The body of Frank Castillo, 44, was pulled from the water at 2:26 p.m. Monday after a jet skier saw it floating. Castillo played for the Chicago Cubs from 1991 to 1997, the Colorado Rockies, the Detroit Tigers, the Toronto Blue Jays, the Boston Red Sox and the Florida Marlins.
On Friday, Oct. 7 the Dust Devils will be celebrating their homecoming against the San Tan Foothill Sabercats. The Sabercats (4-2) beat Valley Christian last Friday 46-21. The game will be another test for Coach Al Ocampo’s young and inexperienced team. San Tan Foothills is not only another test for the SC, but they, too, score points in bunches and put up over 45 points per game against opponents this season. “We are a young team and have to cut down on the turnovers,” Ocampo said.
Congrats to Devin Cordova, State Breakaway Roper Champion and to Kelsy Lutjen, All Around Cowgirl - AZ High School Rodeo State Finals! Both girls qualified for the National Finals Rodeo to be held in Gillette, WY, beginning July 17.
  Nick Brown sees action as a running back, receiver and defensive back on a regular basis for Florence. Last Friday, the versatile junior added quarterback to his resume, with positive results. “I took a few snaps as a freshman, that was it,” Brown said. “It was a new experience, and a great one. But you have to be tough to play quarterback.”
Florence USD is pleased to introduce the new Florence High School Head Varsity Football Coach, Stephen McKane (pending Board approval). Coach McKane is an Arizona native, but he has spent the last six years as defensive coach and recruiting coordinator at Western Illinois University. As a Division I recruiter he has spent many days on the road, and he is looking forward to settling down and raising his kids in our community.
Florence High School and the Florence Unified School District are very excited to announce that Mr. Bill McKane has accepted, pending Governing Board approval, the position of head football coach at Florence High School.   Mr. McKane began serving as the Interim Head Coach when former Head Coach Steve McKane unexpectedly passed away on October 8th. We believe that Coach McKane’s extensive head coaching experience, combined with his ability to lead, motivate and inspire our young men, make him the best choice to lead our football program into the future.  
Swimming teams from Florence and Poston Butte enjoyed a successful day at the Canyon State Academy qualifier meet, held Sept. 15 in Queen Creek.The Florence girls won their team competition with 99 points, with Poston Butte second at 80 and San Manuel third with 38. Host Canyon State won the boys meet with 88 points, followed by Poston Butte with 72, San Manuel with 55 and Florence with 20.
The Florence High volleyball team continued its winning ways with a pair of victories in the last week that extend the Lady Gophers’ record to 34-2 overall. Florence is ranked No. 3 in the AIA’s Division III power poll, trailing Tucson Catalina Magnet and Chandler Seton Catholic. The Lady Gophers traveled to San Tan Valley on Oct. 13 and swept Poston Butte 25-6, 25-14, 25-17.
Flag football and cheer signups are currently underway and Combs Middle School and will continue through the middle of January.  Practices will begin Tuesday, January 14th from 4:00-5:15pm and continue every Tuesday and Thursday until March.
