The Birds are Singing at Arizona State Parks and Trails!

The Birds are Singing at Arizona State Parks and Trails!

This is the best time of year to catch sight of beautiful birds as they flutter throughout the parks to discover the bright indications of oncoming spring! Bird sighting is an easy and entertaining pastime, and your state parks offer great opportunities for it! Each region of Arizona exhibits different bird species, making each adventure unique and exciting.

In the northern region, make your way through Sedona to Red Rock State Park, an incredible riparian area along the Oak Creek where you can spot hummingbirds, wrens, swallows, and finches in the trees or at the observation center. Join rangers at Red Rock for guided bird walks twice a week on Wednesdays and Saturdays!

Southern Arizona offers even more opportunities for birding! Visit Catalina State Park and follows the trails into the Santa Catalina mountains to discover roadrunners, swallows, owls, and more. The park hosts weekly bird walks on Wednesdays, so you can join in on a trail hike to see the birds! Lost Dutchman State Park also hosts several different bird walks throughout the month, giving you plenty of opportunities to learn about our avian friends in the park.

Further south lies Patagonia Lake State Park, on the banks of which birds love to flit between the trees. Unique birds love a good water source like Patagonia Lake, and you’ll spot white-faced ibis, herons, and wild turkeys! Take a spring stroll on one of Patagonia Lake’s bi-weekly bird walks on Mondays or Fridays through April.

Wherever you’re discovering the avian population of Arizona, make sure you wear comfortable shoes, drink plenty of water, and bring along supplies such as binoculars and a bird list. Parks make an updated bird list of recently spotted birds available to visitors and you can learn more about bird watching in all of the parks on the website.
