Free Event for Veterans and Families March 30

Free Event for Veterans and Families March 30

American Legion Post 9, in conjunction with McFarland State Historic Park and the Greater Florence Chamber of Commerce, is hosting the 75th Anniversary Celebration of the G.I. Bill of Rights (Serviceman’s Readjustment Act) and Ernest “Mac” McFarland, Arizona statesmen and co-author of the landmark legislation, on Saturday, March 30, from 10 am to 1 pm in Florence!

The festivities will start at 10:00 AM with a parade down N. Main Street featuring the American Legion Riders, VFW Mounted Color Guard, marching bands and more! The Ceremony of Celebration will immediately follow at approximately 11 am at Padilla Park, 440 N. Main Street.

The ceremony will include presentations from the American Legion and the Town of Florence, testimonials from veterans who have benefitted from the G.I. Bill, the honoring of Purple Heart recipients and Gold Star families, letters of appreciation given to veterans from children and other activities. Evie Clair, a finalist from the America’s Got Talent competition, will be on hand to sing the National Anthem.

At noon, stop by McFarland State Historic Park at 24 W. Ruggles Street for refreshments and tours. Enjoy a book signing with author Gary L. Stuart at 12:30 pm at the Pinal Country Historical Museum at 715 S. Main Street and the Florence Women's Club will be open as an old-time USO club at 231 Willow Street!

The event will acknowledge, honor and celebrate one of the most far-reaching pieces of legislation ever enacted by the United States Government and to recognize Florence resident, Ernest McFarland. McFarland, (1894-1984), served as U.S. Senator, Senate Majority Leader, Governor of Arizona, Chief Justice of the Arizona Supreme Court and founded the Arizona Parks System.
