Enjoy the Season at Your Arizona State Parks

Enjoy the Season at Your Arizona State Parks

Find fall colors in the changing leaves for their moment in the spotlight at the northern parks, like Tonto Natural Bridge, Red Rock, Slide Rock, or Dead Horse Ranch state parks. Chilly days make for beautiful views of the oncoming winter, as the trees transform and the northern bird species find their way south through the parks.

Fall fishing is on at the lake and river parks, and the Arizona Game & Fish Department will be stocking the lakes with rainbow trout for the season. Say goodbye to catfish and hello to trout at Patagonia Lake, Dead Horse Ranch, and Roper Lake state parks! Patagonia Lake State Park offers gorgeous lakeside relaxation south of the city, with camping, brand new cabins, and hiking. Take a walk by the lagoon at Dead Horse Ranch for a laid-back getaway in Cottonwood. If you’re up for a slightly longer drive, head to Roper Lake to enjoy incredible southeastern Arizona and a famous birding location – the very first Arizonan ringed kingfisher was spotted there recently!

Make your way west to the Colorado River to enjoy the beach at Cattail Cove State Park near Lake Havasu State Park, a beautiful getaway right along the west coast of Arizona! Nearby is Buckskin Mountain State Park, a lovely riverside escape with incredible hiking trails!

Fall weather brings the peak season for the southern parks, with cooler temperatures that create perfect hiking spots! Picacho Peak, Catalina, Kartchner Caverns, and Lost Dutchman state parks are great for hiking, offering sunny days from 70 to 80 degrees and mountain views for miles! Picacho Peak and Catalina state parks have challenging hikes for the avid outdoors lover, and easy trails for those who want something more laid back!

Kartchner Caverns offers a longer option, the Ocotillo Trail, a moderate hike connecting the loop trails and giving you awesome views of the Whetstone Mountains. Lost Dutchman is well-known for its incredible views and moderately difficult hikes through the Superstition Mountains, and it’s worth the walk! There is always a new experience to explore!

Visit to plan your exploration! No matter what direction you’re headed, there’s an amazing view and incredible weather for you to enjoy at your Arizona State Parks!
