Valley Christian no match for Foothills

“We came out and scored on the first play from scrimmage,” Coach Rodger Schenks said. “After scoring so many points (82) the week before I wasn’t sure what to expect. We had a good week of practice and the offense performed well.”

While the running game took time to get untracked, senior quarterback Mychael Bruce softened the Trojans’ secondary immediately when he hooked up with favorite receiver Julian Navarette for an 82-yard scoring play. Bruce, who later connected with Zach Denault on a 47-yard scoring play, finished 6-of-6 for 164 yards.

“He did a good job with his passing,” Schenks said. “Once we got the running game going it made things that much more efficient. Right now I would say our offense is ahead of our defense.”

As usual, Carlos Melendez was the player who made the running game go. The senior surpassed the 1,000-yard rushing mark for the season in the first quarter and finished with 205 yards and three touchdowns. He has 1,195 yards for the season. The ‘Cats had 370 yards rushing and 534 yards of total offense, and never allowed the Trojans (1-5) to get closer than within 14 points after the opening quarter.

In an unfortunate twist to the game, a Valley Christian player was carted off the field in the third quarter and hospitalized with a concussion. The Trojans’ coach requested a running clock from that point forward. When the injury occurred, the score was 40-13.

San Tan Foothills (4-2) had four takeaways by four individuals. Chris Bailey had a team-high nine tackles.

The ‘Cats return to action at 7 p.m. Friday against Santa Cruz at Eloy. The game was originally scheduled for Thursday but was pushed back a day. While the Dust Devils (1-5) are struggling, Schenks does not want his team to be thinking ahead one week to Coolidge.

“This is a big mental challenge for us,” Schenks said. “In a high school game you never know what will happen. With fall break coming, it will be a challenge keeping everyone on track.”
