Broncos too much for the Bears

But that’s getting ahead of things. After being belted around 51-6 at unbeaten Poston Butte, the Bears must regroup and they must do so in a hurry if a season that began with such promise is to be salvaged.

“There will be changes on defense,” CHS coach Cayle Ferguson promised. “We will be getting a number of our injured players back so we will be able to do a lot more. I expect a better effort from this point forward.”

Actually, the defense played reasonably well in the first half before being worn down by the disciplined, well-coached Broncos.

“They’re good,” Ferguson said of the Broncos. “They are well-coached and know what to do. They had us broken down real well. They were the best team we have faced.”

Having played Florence, coached by George De La Torre who is father of Poston Butte coach Mike De La Torre was an obvious benefit for the Broncos. Also, that six starters from the previous week – five by injury – were missing was extremely damaging to the Bears.

Poston Butte, with its first group of seniors (similar to San Tan Foothills only much larger in numbers), has the luxury of different players on offense and defense. Still, it is questionable whether Coolidge could have hung with the Broncos even with Tone Hooker, Josh Jordan, Seth Lara and the other missing Bears.

Seth Ellis, visibly not 100 percent because of nagging injuries and workload, was held to 13 carries and 45 yards. The talented 6-foot-1 senior did eclipse the 1,000-yard mark for the season, but was never the factor he was in the first five games of the season. Ellis is at 1,010 yards rushing.

“The idea was to make him earn his yards,” Mike De La Torre said. “We knew he would get his touches. We just wanted to be certain we didn’t give him opportunities.”

Thus, the Broncos kicked the ball away from Ellis on kickoffs. They sealed cutback lanes. Their cornerbacks maintained their positions. Ellis didn’t even lead Coolidge (4-2) in rushing.

Quarterback Mike Felix did, despite losing seven yards rushing in the second half. The senior quarterback finished with nine carries for 48 yards, scoring the lone touchdown from 9 yards in the second quarter.

In addition to the defense wearing down in the second half when Poston Butte outscored Coolidge 34-0, the Bears’ special teams had breakdowns notably with two blocked punts that led to 10 points. Then there were the intangibles, starting with a hangover from the previous week’s heart-wrenching loss to Florence.

“We could see it in (last week’s) practice,” Ferguson said. “And then with the injuries. Against Poston Butte, they didn’t seem as much into it.”

Ferguson knows the task at hand, and it starts Friday.

“Every game from this point forward is must-win if we are going to make the playoffs and get a good seed,” he said.

If the Bears are to get well in a hurry, one would think this week’s homecoming game at 7 p.m. Friday should be just the tonic needed. Winless Combs is the opponents, and the Coyotes have been strafed for 322 points in six games, including 82 by San Tan Foothills in its homecoming game. However, that 53.7 average is close to what Coolidge has yielded (54.3) in its last three games.

Thus, it is hard to imagine the Bears looking ahead to offensive-minded San Tan Foothills a week later.

“We need to focus on Combs,” Ferguson said. “I believe we will be better this week.”

Coolidge needs to get well in a hurry and needs to get its season turned around against Combs before setting its sights on the Sabercats.
