San Tan Valley Veteran's Center Opens in San Tan Valley

IMG_5697

With veterans from all over the state in attendance, the new San Tan Valley Veteran's Center opened on Saturday afternoon.

The event, sponsored by the Joe Foss American Legion Post 97 in San Tan Valley, provided guests with a chance to celebrate veterans and what they have done in their military service. TV screens around the center provided photos of military members and what the American Legion has been doing throughout the state.

Jack Holder, a World War II veteran, was a special guest at the event and talked about his experience in the Navy. Holder talked about how he decided to join the Navy on April 24, 1940, when he was 17 years old. He is a survivor of the Japanese attack on Pearl Harbor.

"We were in roll call and all of a sudden we heard an explosion," Holder said. "As you can imagine, there was lots of devastation."

Holder said that he was honored to be invited to the opening and was able to speak with fellow veterans about their service.

"It's a great occasion. I'm happy to be part of it today," Holder said.

The Manhattan Dolls performed entertainment for those in attendance, singing songs from the 30s and 40s and honoring all branches of the military. A cake was provided by Linda Moore, who is part of the American Legion Auxillary, which is an organization that helps homeless female veterans.

Organizers of the event said that the center will be open for the public. They hope to hold other events at the center for fundraising.

The Center is open Mondays from 9am-6pm and Fridays from 9am-12pm.

LOL, i thought the same thing... nice article, but where is it??

Facebook shows the location as 5764 E Hunt Hwy, Florence. I'm a little confused by that though, as Google Maps shows that location as the Republic Landfill. Guess i'll have to drive by and have a look.
