San Tan Valley Family Gets an Unexpected Surprise

A couple of board members were going to be at Amber's home on Monday, Dec 10th, to ask a few more questions before a decision was made, she was told.  Amber was confused why she was a finalist for anything.  "When Gretchen called me, I couldn't figure out why she had called me," laughed Amber.  "I had no idea that my husband had filled out the application for us."  The interview was to take place first thing in the morning and wasn't going to interfere with the rest of Amber's day, or so she thought.  After the interview was completed, Beverly, representing Gradient's PR firm and Tisha Castillo, President/CEO of the San Tan Valley Chamber of Commerce, were waiting outside of the Murphy's home, alongside Diane Ryan of FOX 10 News.  Amber wasn't a finalist, she was actually the recipient.

When Amber heard the news, she was overwhelmed.  "It's been quite a struggle over the last 3 years.  The last few months have been especially difficult.  Dustin was home and I was trying to care for him 24 hours a day, but he fell a couple of times and I just couldn't get him back up.  Now he's in hospice and it doesn't seem like we'll have him (Dustin) for much longer. They don't even think he'll make it to Christmas."

In addition to Gradient Gives Back Foundation covering the Murphy's mortgage payment for the next twelve months, Susan Miller, with IFG Planners, reached out to the San Tan Valley Chamber of Commerce for additional assistance.  "Never having been out to San Tan Valley, I had no idea who to contact or where to begin.  Contacting the San Tan Valley Chamber of Commerce was a true blessing," said Susan Miller.  "I spoke with the President who not only offered to help, but actually contacted the members directly and within only a few days, we had gift cards for services, groceries, meals, and more.  It was amazing to see the support.  We can't thank the San Tan Valley Chamber of Commerce enough."

"We have amazing businesses in our community," said Tisha Castillo, San Tan Valley Chamber of Commerce President/CEO.  "So many of them stepped up to help, in any way that they could and I could not be more proud.  This wasn't about those businesses getting exposure or advertising, this was about a local family needing help.  Our businesses support our community and our community supports our local businesses.  Supporting each other, the whole community wins," said Tisha Castillo.

"I can't thank all of you enough for all of this," said Amber.  All we have right now is my husband's social security and long term disability.  We could have lost our home.  Now, some of the financial fears are off of my shoulders.  I can get my son the therapy he needs, we can get medical insurance and I can let Dustin know, that we'll be okay. Christmas this year, in spite of it all, will be a little bit brighter. Thank you."
