The story of how Rural Metro Station 841 saved Christmas

The day before Christmas, Rural Metro received a call from a grandmother who has just recently moved to San Tan Valley from out of state.   She explained that her moving costs were much higher than expected.  While she has secured a job, it doesn't start till later in January.  Her main concern however was that she was now responsible for her two grandchildren, while her daughter was recovering in rehab.

In tears she said she had nothing for her grandsons ages 12 and 15. Shawn Gilleland, PIO Rural Metro Fire Dept, who took the call explained that they had some toys, but nothing for kids that age and Rural Metro had distributed all the gift cards donated by local businesses. Tearfully, she said she understood. "I couldn't tell her no," said Gilleland. "So I made a call."

The call went to Battalion Chief Greer who was supervising the East County, including San Tan Valley. "I filled him in and he agreed we should help," said Gilleland. "I had $69 in cash remaining from our donations and I Venmoed him  $100.00 (adding a little out of pocket)."

Cheif Greer and the A shift crew from Station 841 on Hunt Hwy. got an additional donation from Rural Metro's union (United Maricopa firefighters Union local 3878) and went to purchase over $500 worth of gifts. They wrapped and delivered Christmas presents with time to spare.

"I can't explain how proud I am of this organization," said Gilleland.  "Over this holiday we delivered Christmas to 12 families in San Tan Valley, who otherwise would have awoke to little or nothing on Christmas. We turned no one away and even delivered to one family in Florence, which is outside our service area.  This selfless sacrifice is what these men and women give every day. Just this time of year they climbed to new heights to "save" something else for our community family."
