Man Arrested in Pinal County for Assault, Admits Ties to 'Gilbert Goons'

A disturbing incident in Pinal County has led to the arrest of a young man with alleged ties to a local group known as the 'Gilbert Goons'. Jacob Pennington, 20, from Gilbert, was apprehended by deputies early Wednesday morning for his involvement in the assault of a teenage boy.

The attack, which occurred on November 18 near the intersection of Wagon Wheel Road and Quail Trail, just south of Hunt Highway and Hawes Road, was partly captured on video. According to court documents, witnesses observed Pennington striking a 16-year-old boy several times in the face. The footage shows a distressing scene where the victim tries to retreat while Pennington pursues him, hurling racial slurs and violent threats.

Pennington's assault escalated as he removed his belt and continued to hit the downed teen, who was then further attacked by other individuals. A friend of the victim eventually intervened, helping him escape the scene. The boy sustained minor injuries but did not seek hospital treatment.

Upon his arrest, Pennington claimed he was acting in defense of a female friend who had been hit by the boy. He confessed to being part of the 'Gilbert Goons', a name derived from a Snapchat group chat. This revelation has raised concerns about the group's activities, with Pinal County Sheriff Mark Lamb hinting at the possibility of more arrests related to the incident.

This case follows closely on the heels of another arrest. Just an hour prior, 18-year-old Christopher Fantastic was detained for his alleged role in an attack outside a Gilbert In-N-Out restaurant. Since then, three additional arrests have been made in connection with that incident.

Gilbert authorities are currently investigating nine cases of teen violence, with potential connections to the 'Gilbert Goons'. However, no direct link has been established between the group and the tragic death of 16-year-old Preston Lord, who was fatally assaulted at a Halloween party last October. The Queen Creek Police Department has submitted charges to the Maricopa County Attorney's Office, awaiting a decision on formal charges.

As the community reels from these shocking developments, questions about the influence and activities of the 'Gilbert Goons' loom large, with law enforcement closely monitoring the situation. The Pinal County Sheriff's Office continues to urge anyone with information about these incidents to come forward, as they work to ensure the safety and security of local residents.
