FUSD Community Education Department Hosts Penny Drive to Benefit Local Children's Hospitals

Throughout the past year, the COVID-19 pandemic has impacted the lives of most people. The physical, emotional, social, and financial effects have certainly added to the daily stress for many families.

Recently, a Florence Unified School student was hospitalized due to a rare complication of the Corona Virus. The child was diagnosed with MIS-C and spent six worrisome and stressful days in ICU at Banner Children's Hospital Desert. While the child was recovering, they were given board games to play and encouraged to take them home. Because of this fact, mom realized the need for additional board games was probably greater now than it was before.

To address this need, the FUSD Community Ed Department decided to host a Penny Drive. All funds raised would be utilized to purchase board games for the local children's hospitals. The Penny drive was held for two weeks from March 1st through the 12th. FUSD students, employees, and local community members all stepped up to the challenge and over $4200 was collected. One student donated $10 of his birthday money and a security guard donated all that was in his change jar at home which totaled almost $75. Their selfless acts of generosity and kindness for others were admirable during these challenging times. Finance Specialist, Joleen Carberry stated, "It was so wonderful to hear how well the students responded to the Penny drive and more importantly how happy they were to donate to other children in need, especially during these crazy and uncertain times. We collected enough money to purchase approximately 300 board games!" The board games will be delivered and shared between the Phoenix Children's Hospital and Banner Children's Hospital Desert.

"Our FUSD family is strong especially during times of crisis" said Superintendent Chris Knutsen. "Throughout this pandemic I have witnessed selfless acts of kindness, generosity and genuine concern for each other. The Community ED Penny Drive is another example of how FUSD functions as a family and continues to promote the positive."
