Congressman Gosar's Office and the ACC respond to Johnson Utilities High Nitrate Alert

Arizona Corporation Commissioner Tom Forese

The Office of U.S. Congressman Paul Gosar received many emails and calls concerning the water quality concerns at Johnson Utilities. While this issue is a state matter and not of a federal nature, Congressman Gosar wanted to provide a response to those who have reached out to him for assistance.

We immediately contacted AZ Corporation Commissioner Tom Forese who provided this response.

As always, we appreciate the opportunity to assist you!

Penny Pew, Office of U.S. Congressman Paul Gosar

Below is the letter from AZ Corporation Commissioner Tom Forese:

Honorable Paul Gosar, Johnson Utility Customers and Those Concerned:

On Dec 2 2016 the Arizona Department of Environmental Quality (ADEQ) notified Johnson Utilities customers in Pinal County to not provide water to infants under the age of six months or use the water to make infant formula because of elevated nitrate levels. One of Johnson's wells had been providing elevated levels of nitrate.

Johnson Utilities was notified by ADEQ on November 21, 2016 of the slightly elevated nitrate levels. The same day Johnson Utilities identified the well that was providing the elevated nitrate and immediately ceased use of the well. The well has not provided water since that day on November 21, 2016. A further sample collected on November 30, 2016 demonstrated the nitrate level of Johnson Utilities drinking water (having disconnected the identified well) met the federal drinking water standards. In response, ADEQ lifted the Johnson Utilities Drinking Water Advisory for nitrate.

Although the advisory has been lifted and the problem resolved, Johnson Utilities will continue to keep an eye on the issue. Johnson Utilities has agreed to monitor for nitrate more frequently than required in order to reaffirm nitrate levels and alleviate concerns. I will continue to work with the Commission, ADEQ and Johnson Utilities and personally monitor the issue. I offer anyone with concerns to contact me and I will be happy to discuss the matter.
