Celebrate National Reading Month by Reading to Shelter Dogs

March in San Tan Valley brings an endearing and unique opportunity for children to celebrate National Reading Month. In a heartwarming initiative that benefits both kids and canines, Pinal County Animal Care & Control is inviting young volunteers to read to dogs during business hours throughout March.

A Tale for Tails: Encouraging Compassion and Literacy

Engaging children in reading is a timeless challenge, and what better way to ignite a love for books than by combining it with the love for animals? Parents can bring their children to the shelter to read to the dogs, a practice that not only helps children improve their reading skills but also provides comforting companionship to shelter dogs waiting for their forever homes.

Setting Up Your Volunteer Day

To arrange your child's first day of reading:

  1. Book Your Spot: Parents are required to email This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it. for full details and to schedule their visit.

Volunteer Requirements and Guidelines

  1. Parental Supervision: A parent or guardian must be present with their child and sign in with the public volunteer waiver at each visit.
  2. Bring Your Favorite Books: There will be reading logs available to track the hours spent reading, but volunteers are asked to bring their own books.
  3. Stay Within the Lines (of Safety): Children and parents should follow the "Reading to the Dogs Rules" to ensure a safe and enjoyable experience for everyone.

The Rules of Engagement

A flyer detailing the rules has been released, which highlights the importance of safety and respect for the animals. Volunteers must adhere to the following guidelines:

  1. Waiver Sign-In: Always sign the waiver when you come in.
  2. Logging Time: Keep track of your reading sessions.
  3. No Physical Contact Through Kennels: To ensure the safety of both children and dogs, there is to be no fingers or petting through the kennels.
  4. Kennel Boundaries: Do not open the kennels.
  5. Feeding Protocol: Treats are not to be given if there is more than one dog in a kennel.

A Prize for Paws and Pages

Incentivizing the young readers, the shelter has introduced a competitive element:

  • Track the Time: Children are encouraged to log their reading hours diligently.
  • A Reward for Dedication: The child with the most hours logged by the end of the month will be awarded a gift card.
  • Spotlight on a Star: The top reader will also be featured in the shelter's next newsletter, celebrating their contribution and encouraging others to participate.

This initiative offers an enriching experience that teaches children about the joy of giving, the importance of community service, and the impact of kindness towards animals. So, parents, if you're looking for a meaningful activity that combines learning with compassion, guide your little ones to the shelter this March. It's a purr-fect opportunity to make a difference—one page at a time.
