Update from PCSO:

Reckless Driver Crashes into Canal, Rescued by Deputies

On October 29, Pinal County Sheriff’s deputies responding to reports of a reckless driver near Copper Mine Road and Hunt Highway, arrived to find the vehicle flipped upside-down in the canal west of Hunt Highway. Just after 9 p.m., two deputies entered the canal and rescued the driver from the vehicle, sustaining minor cuts to their hands when they broke the car windows. The driver was airlifted to a local hospital where he was treated for not lifethreatening injuries.

At about 8:50 p.m., the PCSO 911 Emergency Center started receiving calls of a reckless vehicle travelling west on Copper Mine Road in the Copper Basin Subdivision of San Tan Valley. As deputies were responding to the area, a caller reported the car had driven across Hunt Highway at Copper Mine Road, and flipped into the canal. Deputies arrived and witnesses reported the driver was still in the vehicle, which was floating upside down in the canal.

Sheriff Paul Babeu said, “Our deputies on-scene made a split-second decision to enter the water and extricate the driver from the car. They smashed out the window and pulled the man out of the car to safety. The deputies’ actions saved the man’s life.”

Deputies sustained minor cuts to their arms and hands when they broke out the window and pulled the man out. They were treated and released from a local hospital. The circumstances of the driver’s actions are under investigation. At this point, it is believed that the man had a medical issue while driving, causing him to drive through stop signs and crash into the canal.
