Champion School San Tan Valley Implements MindUP program

miindup

Champion Schools is implementing the MindUP program district-wide and has seen amazing results so far. MindUP focuses on the social-emotional growth of students. Harvard University conducted a research study involving 1,000 people whom they tracked from age birth through 32, looking for common characteristics that contribute to success. They found that childhood self-control predicts physical health, personal wealth, and public safety. Self control is the single most important factor in predicting lifelong success, more important than intelligence or social class. Teaching mindfulness in their schools sets thieir students up to make a difference in their own lives which permeates society. Champion Schools is proud to be helping to spread the message of mindfulness in the community.

Three times a day, students and teachers practice deep breathing, which has been shown to calm down the amygdala. This is the part of the brain that is hyper responsive to stress. Deep breathing also allows the prefrontal cortex, the part of the brain related to learning and higher order thinking, to function more effectively, reducing negative reactions to stress and allowing for more growth. Deep breathing is the Core Practice of MindUP . In addition to the Core Practice, students also learn about their brains, self awareness, self management, social awareness, relationship skills, and responsible decision making.

Another study involving 213 schools and 270,034 students kindergarten through high school found that, compared to students not exposed to Social Emotional Learning classroom-based programming, students in Social Emotional Learning programs demonstrated significantly improved social and emotional skills, attitudes, behavior, and academic performance.

Furthermore, students involved in Social Emotional Learning programs such as MindUP reflect an 11-percentile point gain in academic achievement.
