Beware of scams targeting APS customers

It's important to stay informed of existing and new scams to protect yourself. That's why we are sharing signs of common scams and how to avoid them. Please share this information with family and friends to help stop scams.

Recognizing a Scam

  • If someone calls, texts, emails or appears at your home or business demanding immediate payment of your energy bill and threatening to disconnect your service — it's a scam. Scammers may even disguise their phone number on your caller ID, so it appears as APS. Be aware that we will never contact our customers in this way to demand immediate payment.
  • Never purchase a prepaid card to prevent your service from being disconnected. It's a scam. We will never require payment via a prepaid card or specify the method of payment you should use.
  • We notify customers with past-due accounts in advance if they become at risk of disconnection, never only one time and never an hour or less before disconnection. We also strive to offer flexibility and options like payment arrangements, or our notices provide the payment deadline, while scammers are focused on getting your money right now.
  • If anyone comes to your door or through neighborhoods claiming to collect bill payments on APS's behalf, this is also a scam. Legitimate APS representatives who visit neighborhoods and customer sites to perform work carry ID and cannot take payment from customers.

Door-to-Door Sales Scams

In-person scams include predatory or fraudulent door-to-door sales practices by people claiming to be with or in partnership with APS or about state energy policies or incentives that just do not exist.

For example, APS does not sell or lease solar systems and is currently not in partnership with any solar installers to offer special deals or incentives by phone or door-to-door.

Protecting Yourself from Falling Victim

Never use the phone number provided by the scammer and do not use the "call back" or redial feature to return the call. Hang up and call us at 602-371-7171 (800-253-9405) to verify the status of your account or check your account on aps.com.

Never share personal information or credit card information with an unverified source.

Steps to Take if You Are Targeted

Hang up the phone, delete the text or email, or shut the door. Report the incident to local law enforcement. Contact us the Pinal County Sheriff's Office 520-866-5111. Contact the Arizona Attorney General's Office at 602-542-5763.
