Letter to the Editor: Lamb is Dangerous

He is proud to state that he is a member of the Constitutional Sheriffs and Peace Officers Association (CSPOA). I find it quite disturbing that the tenants of this organization say that the county sheriff has the ultimate authority within a county to the point of interpreting the constitution and determining which laws are to be followed based on his or her understanding of the law.

The CSPOA states on it's webpage the following: "In addition to upholding the law, the sheriff is also charged with upholding the supreme law, the Constitution. The law enforcement powers held by the sheriff supersede those of any agent, officer, elected official or employee from any level of government when in the jurisdiction of the county. The vertical separation of powers in the Constitution makes it clear that the power of the sheriff even supersedes the powers of the President. Furthermore, it is this responsibility that grants a Sheriff the Constitutional authority to check and balance all levels of government within the jurisdiction of the County." Emphasis added.

I'm not sure that we should be voting to put in place someone who believes that they have the sole authority to dictate which laws are to be followed or that they have no authority above them to put a check on their interpretation of the constitution.

I think I'll vote for Kaye Dickson for Pinal County Sheriff. I know she believes in following the law and not making up laws as she sees fit.
