This year there have been a lot of great changes to The Golf Club at Johnson Ranch, (where the Terrace is), but I had not been to the restaurant lately. It was nice to see the staffs' familiar faces. When I asked Gina Petershagen, manager of the Terrace, what was new, it was obvious that I had been missing a lot. She went on about multiple changes to the menu such as Tuesdays taco night, Tues. all day $4 margaritas, and the soon to be famous BBQ. (Growing up in Texas I've had some of the best BBQ in the country and it is probably one of my favorite things to eat. However tonight I came for the 99 cent tacos.)
We sat out on the patio overlooking the driving range on the tenth hole of the golf course. You could say that any view of Arizona's landscape is beautiful, but you really must see this one for yourself. Our server for the night was Brandy. When asked what I would like, I ordered a $2 pint and a few tacos to start. I didn't think that there were more options for a 99 cent taco, but Brandy let me know differently. I had choices of beef, shredded beef, chicken, and sides of rice and beans (also 99 cents each). I figured why not try one of each. No mystery meat here, it's not like ordering from a fast food restaurant when you don't really want to know the real answer of what's inside. Well that night I think I ate at least seven tacos. They were all great, but my favorite was definitely the chicken.
Later that week, I took some clients for a round of golf and was reminded about the BBQ brisket sandwich from the flier covering my scorecard on the golf cart. It said "smoked 10 hours". I am always excited to try what some claim to be the best BBQ, but I am usually disappointed. It's hard to beat good 'ole Texas BBQ. From one bite you can usually tell if it is real BBQ or if it seems like someone just reheated a frozen dinner. I almost couldn't wait to make the turn after the eighth hole so I could place my order. The GPS screens on the golf carts make it very convenient to place your order. Once you are approaching the ninth tee box, the screen will ask you to place an order . After pushing a few buttons and placing your order you won't have to wait long for your food (if at all) on your way to the tenth hole.
The packaging of the brisket sandwich is nothing fancy (good BBQ never is). It is just a plain white hamburger bun and smoked brisket. A common thing that is usually served with a BBQ sandwich is a couple of pickles, but not with this one. It was hot, I don't mean spicy just pleasantly warm. Biting into it made me forget about the plain bun and lack of pickles. The brisket was sauced just right. The meat wasn't dry at all and there was no need to ask for extra sauce. WOW! This was a great sandwich! This the first time in a while that I had been happy with the BBQ here in Arizona. The guys I was golfing with weren't talking. They each ordered the brisket sandwich too. You could however here them constantly moaning and licking their fingers. After eating half of this the only thing that I was not happy with was that I did not order two of them.
I am already looking forward to my new Tuesday night hangout and next round of golf. So far their BBQ is the best that I've had in San Tan Valley. Gina believes it is also, and says so in her latest newsletter (below). It's always great to be reminded of home.
Thank you Gina, I am loving the new changes/additions to the Terrace restaurant.
The following is from the latest Terrace newsletter:
