Charging Battery Fire Destroys Johnson Ranch Home
A house fire in Johnson Ranch early Tuesday morning has left three local residents without a home, after flames that appear to have started from a charging e-bike or e-scooter battery quickly spread through the property.
Emergency crews responded to a 2:30 a.m. 911 call reporting a garage fire on April 7. According to Rural Metro Fire, the first arriving engine found heavy smoke and flames coming from the garage, with the fire already extending into a second-story bedroom and the attic.
The occupants, who were asleep upstairs at the time, woke to shouts of "FIRE!" and were able to escape with the family's dogs. Fire crews rescued one dog, while two others made it out on their own.
One person was transported to the hospital and remains in the ICU due to smoke inhalation and burns.
Firefighters were able to bring the blaze under control, but the home was declared a total loss.
Family Loses Home, Vehicles, and Belongings
According to family members, the fire destroyed everything inside the home, including three vehicles, three motorcycles, and all personal belongings.
The residents, described as working adults living paycheck to paycheck, are now facing the immediate challenge of securing housing while navigating insurance claims.
"35 years' worth of life is gone," one resident shared. "Thankfully, all people are okay and the dogs are okay."
A GoFundMe has been created to help cover immediate needs such as housing, clothing, food, and transportation. Community members who wish to help can contribute here: https://gofund.me/27dc8bb40
Growing Concern: Fires Linked to Lithium Battery Charging
Fire officials say this incident is part of a growing trend across the Valley involving lithium-ion battery fires from devices such as e-bikes, e-scooters, and hoverboards.
Many of these fires occur while devices are charging and can escalate quicklyโoften spreading before occupants are even aware of the danger.
PSA: Battery Charging Safety MattersAs more households use rechargeable devices, fire officials are urging residents to take precautions when charging batteries:
- Use only the manufacturer-approved charger for your device
- Never use off-brand or incompatible chargers
- Do not charge devices overnight or while unattended
- Keep batteries away from flammable materials
- Avoid charging in enclosed indoor spaces when possible
- Check batteries regularly for swelling, cracks, or damage
- Install and maintain smoke detectors near charging areas
- Do not charge damaged batteries, especially after a crash or drop
Lithium battery fires can ignite quickly and burn intensely, leaving little time to react.
Community Gratitude for First Responders
The family expressed deep gratitude to Rural Metro Fire and the Pinal County Sheriff's Office for their quick response.
"They saved lives," a family member shared. "We wouldn't be here to thank them otherwise."
A Reminder for the Community
This incident serves as a reminder that everyday devices can carry serious risks if not handled carefully.
Fire officials encourage residents throughout San Tan Valley to review their battery charging habits and take simple steps to reduce the risk of fire in their homes.
