Initially reported as a drive-by shooting, Navideh Forghani, spokeswoman for the Pinal County Sheriff's Office, stated an investigation is ongoing, but they believe the shooting was due to a drug-related incident and was not a random act of violence.

Allegations have been made that Maldonado and Alvarez had planned to the steal the drugs from Tyran Simmons. There was a disagreement of sorts and shots were fired, killing Simmons.

Tyran's family has established a Gofundme account to help with funeral expenses.
