New Banner hospital opens Monday in San Tan Valley

Banner Health officials bill their newest hospital as a commitment to healthcare in the Southeast Valley, but it's also a vote of confidence that growth will resume in an area where home construction has slowed down dramatically since 2007.

"There already are about 130,000 people in our service area -- Queen Creek, San Tan Valley, northern Pinal County -- and we believe that when this economic slowdown passes there will be many more," said Deb Krmpotic, CEO of the new Banner Ironwood Medical Center, which will open Monday. "We believe this will be a growing, vital area and we'll fill a real need."

The new $150 million, 227,000-square-foot, five-story hospital is at Gantzel and Combs roads at the northern edge of Pinal County, about 28 driving miles from downtown Mesa and 40 miles from downtown Phoenix.
