UPDATED: FUSD School Bus Crashes, Bus Driver Dies

Around 1:45pm Tuesday afternoon, a Florence Unified School District bus leaving Poston Butte to pick up students, ran off the road and crashed into a fence.  There were no students on the bus at the time of the accident.

The only occupants of the bus were the bus driver and an assistant bus driver.  When PCSO arrived on scene, they found the bus driver, who was not identified, with serious injuries to his head and abdominal area.  The driver was transported to the hospital where he was pronounced dead. The bus aid was transported to the hospital for observation.

The crash happened near Gantzel Road and Bella Vista Road in San Tan Valley.

The Pinal County Sheriff's Office is working to determine what caused the crash, or if there may have been a medical episode that occurred.

The Florence Unified School District sent out the following statement:

"A single bus accident occurred at Poston Butte High School around 1:45pm today. The bus was unoccupied by students. Tragically, our bus driver passed away. The bus aid was transported to the hospital as a precaution. The Florence Unified School District has worked directly with the Pinal County Sheriff’s Office throughout this medical situation. At this time, we will not allow media on our campus due to the collection of evidence by the Pinal County Sheriff’s Office."

 

UPDATED: The driver was Jerzy Adamsyzk.  He was 74 years old. It is still unclear if the driver died from injuries associated with the crash or suffered some sort of medical episode.
