Take up quilt making with Helen Kovac and CAC’s community education program

Quilt Making for Beginners will be held on consecutive Saturdays - Oct. 22 and 29 - from 10 a.m.-Noon. Participants will learn the basics of quilt making while using the latest quick cutting techniques and machine piecing skills. Everything from fabric selection to binding the finished quilt will be covered in this class.

Quilt Making: T-shirt Quilt also is scheduled for consecutive Saturdays - Nov. 12 and 19 - from 1-3 p.m. Students will learn the basics of quilt making while making a quilt from old T-shirts. Students also will learn the latest quick cutting techniques and machine piecing skills.

Kovac taught child development and fashion design at South Mountain High School in Phoenix for 10 years. While she currently teaches career exploration at Maricopa High School, education is her second career.

Kovac previously owned and operated two Sew & Vac stores, as well as two sewing schools. Along with her husband, Larry, she currently operates a consulting business that specializes in business training for educational technology and career and technical education; finding and using no-cost software for projects; social and ethical issues from safety to netiquette; determining technological needs; shortcuts, tips, and help for spending less time getting organized; classroom management; negotiating and executing event rental contracts; design; and execute marketing strategies such as setting ticket prices, income/expense ratios, attendance forecasting and tracking related to specific events.

She also has a culinary background that includes baking and decorating cakes of all sizes for all events, as well as party planning.

A 13-year veteran as an educator, Kovac has two master’s degrees from Northern Arizona University, one in career and technical education and the other in educational technology.
