Take Back the Night with CAC March 28

Participants then will march to the college’s Superstition Mountain Campus for an inspirational program slated to begin just after 6 p.m. The post-march program includes various guest speakers including Apache Junction Police Chief Jerald Monahan – a 2011 CAC Wall of Success inductee - and well-known local spoken word artist Divine Essence.

An award-winning public speaker for more than 10 years, Ehmka has taken the stage at hundreds of schools, events and conferences nationwide, and has engaged more than 75,000 people with her story of strength.

Ehmka’s passion stems from her personal experience with drug and alcohol-related sexual assault - an incident that happened during her college years. She brings a message of strength, hope and awareness, and delivers a dynamic and compelling testimony that inspires men and women of all ages.

Essence is a well-known spoken word and slam artist. She also is a motivational and inspirational speaker and advocate for women.

Essence began writing poetry at the age of 12 and performed her first poem live at the age of 17. After her positive experience of performing live and seeing the impact it made upon others, she realized that there was power in the spoken word and pursued a career in performing and teaching performance arts to youth and adults.

Divine is a mother, a poet, a transformational activist, a teacher and a creator. She continues to express her poetry and lives every day to remind young women and others that they are beautiful.

Monahan has been a well-known advocate for victims of sexual assault and is a pillar for the community of Apache Junction.

He is a 34-year public safety official having begun his law enforcement career with the Casa Grande Police Department. In 2002, he accepted a commander’s position, the rank of captain, with the Pinal County Sheriff’s Office. A short time later, he was appointed as the chief deputy.

In June of 2008, he left the Pinal County Sheriff’s Office to accept the chief of police position with the Apache Junction Police Department where he continues to serve today.

Monahan has been a member of the Pinal County Domestic Violence Coalition since 1996, and was instrumental in getting the Pinal County Domestic Violence Fatality Review Team started in 2006, serving as one of its first co-chairs.

He was appointed to the Governor’s Commission to Prevent Violence against Women in 2003 and reappointed in 2008. He also was appointed by the Arizona Supreme Court to serve on the Committee to Study the Impact of Domestic Violence on the Courts in 2005.

Monahan taught the domestic violence curriculum at the Central Arizona Regional Law Officers Training Academy (CARLOTA) from 1992 to 2002 and served on the subject matter expert committee to develop and update this curriculum for the Arizona Peace Officers Standards and Training Board.

In November of 2011, Monahan was inducted into the Central Arizona College Wall of Success.
