Ranch Elementary Hands On Learning With Bar Graphs
The third grade teachers decided to use the students themselves quite literally to make a “Human Bar Graph.” Students voted to use “Favorite Pets” as the subject and used the class data to complete the charts.
Students outlined a graph on the floor using tape and then were given the task of deciding what the number increments would be on the y-axis, left of the graph. As a class, they came up with the number increments of ten (10) modeled after their “count-by” in multiplication. Students were then asked to stand in the graph while the teacher placed tape around them to section off the graph.
After the students stepped away, they were able to see the result of their hard work. They were then asked by their teacher to work in groups to come up with questions using the information from the graph. These questions were then answered by neighboring groups.
