Mountain Vista Middle School to Shut Down

The governing board voted to close Mountain Vista Middle School at the end of this school year. The decision to close the school was based on the low student enrollment.  Mountain Vista has the lowest enrollment in the entire Coolidge Unified School District.  With a capacity for 964 students, only 334 kids attended the site.

"We did this in Coolidge (for different reasons) and it has worked very well," said Superintendent Charie Wallace.  "Of course we always knock on wood when we make that statement. "

Beginning with the 2015-2016 school year, 6th grade students will attend San Tan Heights Elementary School, which will become a K—6 school.  Seventh and eighth graders will go to San Tan Foothills High School, which will become a 7-12 school.  The seventh and eighth graders will be in a separate wing on the Foothills campus.

At this time, the San Tan Heights HOA as shown some interest in either leasing or buying the building for a community center.  There is also a physical therapy group (Head to Toe) that has leased a wing since last spring.

"We do hope that the student population increases so that we can reopen the school in a couple of years," Wallace said.

Mountain Vista is a middle school for grades 6-8, located in the San Tan Heights community of San Tan Valley, Arizona, which is part of the Coolidge Unified School District.  Coolidge Unified is one of three school districts in San Tan Valley.
