Combs offers After School Enrichment Classes at All 5 Elementary School Campuses

Samantha White - Missing San Taan Valley girl

Building Bonanza is an innovative company that uses curriculum based classes with LEGO bricks that teach students how to “think outside the box.”  Students at Combs Middle School will have the opportunity to watch their stories come to life with Storytelling and Stop-Motion Animation.  The course will teach the basics of storytelling, storyboarding, and character development.  Students will then write a short film, which they will then “cast” with LEGO figures and film them in LEGO-built scenes one frame at a time.  Using Apple Mac computers and the latest software, instructors will teach participants how to add sound effects and complete their film.

At Harmon Elementary, Building Bonanza will offer a brand new curriculum:  Experimenting with LEGO Mindstorms Robotics.  The LEGO Mindstorms system gives children the tools and software to build, from scratch, their very own robots.  Third through sixth grade children will be introduced to problem solving with robots, including building and programming their own LEGO robots.

Simonton Elementary third through sixth grade students who love going to movies may be interested in REEL STARS Moving Making Club presented by Building Bonanza.  Basic film principles, such as camera placement, shot composition, acting, as well as the art of story-telling and script writing will all be presented.  The class will together create a short film.

Young Rembrandts' cartoon classes will teach a step-by-step drawing method with the additional fun and excitement of cartooning. The original Young Rembrandts cartoon lessons teach children how to create original cartoon characters; draw action, movement and sounds; draw expressions to convey moods;  and develop a series of drawings that tell a joke.  While cartooning is fun and engaging, your child will gain mastery in a unique drawing style, and improve their core learning skills.  This class will be offered at Ellsworth, Harmon, Ranch, and Simonton.

SWCMA, a Scottsdale based karate studio, will offer an age and ability appropriate Okinawa Karate course at Combs Traditional Academy, Harmon, Ellsworth, Simonton and Ranch Elementary Schools.  This six week class will improve flexibility, muscle tone, speed and strength.  Additional skills such as courtesy, respect, self-esteem, conflict resolution, discipline, and leadership skills will be developed.

Additional course and registration information can be located under the “Community Education” tab on the district’s website www.jocombs.org.
