Snake Safety Alert: San Tan Valley Residents Report Increased Sightings

snake-alert

As the seasons change and the weather warms up, snake sightings in Santana Valley have been on the rise, prompting experts to issue safety guidelines and residents to share their recent encounters.

Local resident from Quail Run commented, "Be careful, the snakes are on the move. This was sitting at my front door when my dog and I came home from a walk." The unwelcome visitor turned out to be a western diamondback rattlesnake, a venomous species native to the area.

Another resident from Magma Ranch reported, "Found a baby in my backyard the other day." Similarly, a homeowner in Copper Basin found a young diamondback trapped in a glue trap in their garage, while a Castlegate local shared, "Yep, found one in my yard yesterday!"

With these recent sightings, it's essential for residents to be informed and cautious. Here are some safety tips to remember:

  1. Stay Calm and Keep Distance: If you encounter a snake, remain calm and slowly move away from the snake, giving it plenty of space.
  2. Watch Your Step: Always be cautious while walking in areas with tall grass, underbrush, or rocky terrain. Wear closed shoes and use a flashlight during nighttime.
  3. Secure Your Home: Ensure all doors, windows, and vents are properly sealed to prevent snakes from entering your home. Check for holes and gaps regularly.
  4. Avoid Poking or Handling: Never try to handle or provoke a snake, even if you believe it to be non-venomous.
  5. Keep Yards Clean: Regularly mow your lawn, trim bushes, and remove debris or clutter where snakes might hide.
  6. Educate Kids: Ensure children understand the importance of not approaching or handling any snake they might come across.
  7. Know the Local Species: Familiarize yourself with the common snake species in your area to determine if they are venomous or not.

If bitten, seek medical attention immediately and try to remember the color and shape of the snake to help medical professionals with the treatment.
