School Safety Reminder for San Tan Valley Residents

As the early morning hustle and bustle of a new school year has returned to our neighborhoods, it's more crucial than ever for San Tan Valley residents to prioritize safety on the roads.

While the excitement of returning to school after the summer break might have simmered down since kids in San Tan Valley returned to their classrooms last month, the need for road safety awareness remains. School buses, parents dropping off their children, kids on bicycles, and those walking create a bustling environment in the early hours.

Despite school buses being the safest way for children to commute, it's alarming to know that nearly 12,000 children are injured and 26 lose their lives in school bus-related incidents every year. And it's not just on the bus where they're at risk. Many of these accidents occur while kids are getting on or off the bus.

Shawn Gilleand, the Public Information Officer with Rural Metro Fire Central Arizona, emphasized the importance of safety measures. He shared some vital tips parents and guardians should discuss with their children:

• Boarding the Bus: Maintain a safe distance of at least three giant steps (6 feet) from the curb and ensure the bus driver sees you.
• Alighting from the Bus: When crossing the street after getting off the bus, always walk at least 10 feet ahead of the bus to ensure the driver can see you. Only cross the road once the driver signals it's safe.
• Walking to School: Always use the sidewalk and prefer street corners or intersections to cross. Always look both ways before crossing.
• Cycling: Safety first! Helmets are a must, and they should fit correctly. Stick to the right side of the road, stop before crossing streets, and ensure your attire and bike have reflective materials for better visibility.

As our community buzzes with school-related activities, it's also a call to drivers in San Tan Valley: with increased pedestrian activity, especially during morning and afternoon school hours, drivers need to remain vigilant. Slow down in school zones, watch for kids darting out from between parked cars, and always stop for school buses.
