What to Do First if You Suspect a Gas Leak at Home
Leaving the area comes first if a natural gas leak is suspected at a San Tan Valley area home. The calls come after.
September is National Preparedness Month, and City of Mesa Gas, the natural gas provider for the San Tan Valley area, is passing along the warning signs of a gas leak and the order of steps a household should follow.
Signs That May Indicate a Gas Leak
Any one of the following may indicate a leak:
- A rotten-egg odor, faint or strong. Any rotten-egg smell warrants a call. Do not wait for it to get stronger.
- A hissing or unusual sound coming from a pipeline or an appliance.
- Blowing dirt or bubbling water outdoors.
Leave the Area, Then Call
If you suspect a gas leak, leave the area immediately. Once you are away from the area, call 911, then call City of Mesa Gas at 480-644-4277.
Keep that number with the other phone numbers residents need for the San Tan Valley area, somewhere a family member can find them quickly. More on preparing for utility emergencies is at mesaaz.gov/energy.
