Stay Safe Around Natural Gas Pipelines
Natural gas pipelines play a quiet but essential role in delivering energy to homes and businesses across our region. Because most pipelines are buried underground, many people don't realize they live or work near one โ which makes awareness especially important.
One of the easiest ways to identify a nearby pipeline is by looking for yellow pipeline markers. These signs are placed above ground to alert the public to the presence of an underground natural gas line. While the exact location of the pipeline may not be directly beneath the marker, it signals that a pipeline is nearby.
Pipeline markers provide three critical pieces of information:
- Who operates the pipeline
- What product the pipeline carries
- Who to call in an emergency
If you ever notice a sulfur-like odor (similar to rotten eggs), hear a hissing sound, see dead vegetation in an otherwise green area, or observe dirt blowing into the air, these could be signs of a gas leak. In those situations, leave the area immediately and call 911 and 480-644-4277.
Knowing where pipelines are located helps protect not only your safety, but also the essential services that keep our communities running. Before digging or doing any ground work, always call 811 to have underground utilities marked.

Staying informed is a simple step that can make a big difference in keeping our community safe.
