Start the new year with natural gas safety awareness
As the new year begins, residents are encouraged to make natural gas safety a priority at home and with their families.
Natural gas is colorless and odorless, which is why a distinctive rotten-egg smell is added to help people detect a potential leak. Knowing the warning signs and what actions to take can help prevent serious injuries or property damage.
In addition to a rotten-egg odor, signs of a possible natural gas leak may include:
- A blowing or hissing sound coming from a pipeline, gas meter, or appliance
- Unusual changes in the surrounding area, such as dead or dying plants, blowing dirt, or bubbling water
If any of these signs are noticed, residents should leave the area immediately and from a safe location call 911 and Mesa's emergency gas hotline at 480-644-4277.
Additional information about natural gas safety, including prevention tips and emergency guidance, is available at mesaaz.gov/gassafety.
Officials remind residents that quick action and awareness are key to keeping households and neighborhoods safe throughout the year.
