Simple Steps to Keep Your Natural Gas Meter Safe
A small part of your home that's easy to overlook can play a big role in keeping your family safe—your natural gas meter.
Mesa's Energy Resources Department is reminding residents that keeping the area around your gas meter clear and protected can help prevent damage, reduce safety risks, and ensure crews can access it quickly if needed.
Easy Ways to Keep Your Home SafeHere are a few simple steps homeowners can take:
Keep the area clear
Make sure there's nothing blocking access to your gas meter. A clean, open space allows for proper operation and quick access in case of an emergency.
Don't stack or cover it
Avoid placing items on or around the meter. It should always remain uncovered and unobstructed.
Protect it from vehicles
If your meter is located near a driveway or parking area, consider installing a barrier or being extra mindful when parking to prevent accidental damage.
Be mindful when landscaping
Trees, bushes, and shrubs should be planted at least three feet away. Over time, roots can grow and interfere with or damage the meter.
Gas meters are built to be durable, but they still require basic care. Damage to a meter—whether from impact, overgrown landscaping, or obstruction—can create safety hazards and disrupt service.
Taking a few minutes to check your meter area can help prevent bigger issues down the road.
