MVD Adds New Ways for Drivers to Flag Communication Needs to First Responders
Arizona drivers who may communicate differently during a traffic stop can now add more detail to the voluntary alert first responders see, under enhancements the state Motor Vehicle Division announced July 30.
The communication accommodation program places a voluntary flag on a driver or vehicle record. When an officer or first responder pulls up that record during a stop or a crash response, the flag tells them the person may need extra time or a different approach to communicate.
What's New
The update adds three features:
- A text box on the driver record and another on the vehicle record, each holding up to 500 characters, where you describe your specific communication needs in your own words.
- A switch to turn the alert on or off at any time.
- An emergency contact field that only first responders can see.
MVD developed the enhancements with Preston's Pursuit, building on the state law that created the accommodation program.
Blue Envelope Program Still Available
The accommodation flag works alongside the separate Blue Envelope Program, which also helps drivers communicate with law enforcement during traffic stops. Drivers can use one program or both, depending on their needs.
How to Sign Up
Signing up is voluntary. Log in at AZMVDNow.gov and update your driver or vehicle record, or visit any MVD office. Full details are at azdot.gov/communication-accommodations.
