ADOT Warns Arizonans About New Scam Text Claiming Unpaid Traffic Tickets

Arizona officials are warning residents about a new scam text message circulating across the state that falsely claims recipients owe money for an unpaid traffic ticket.

According to the Arizona Department of Transportation (ADOT), the messages attempt to trick people into clicking a link and providing personal or financial information. The texts claim the recipient owes the "Arizona Department of Vehicles" for an outstanding ticket and directs them to a website to make a payment.

Officials say the message is completely fraudulent.

There is no agency called the "Arizona Department of Vehicles," and ADOT does not collect payments for unpaid traffic tickets. Even if it did, the agency would not contact residents by text message demanding payment.

The scam message also includes a suspicious web link where victims are asked to submit payment for the supposed ticket. ADOT strongly advises residents not to click any links in suspicious text messages.

The agency notes the message itself contains several red flags, including poor grammar, incorrect agency names, and a fake website.

Residents who are concerned about potential fees or issues with their driving record can check their official Motor Vehicle Division account at azmvdnow.gov or visit an MVD office to speak with staff directly.

ADOT says scam messages impersonating government agencies have become increasingly common and urges Arizonans to remain cautious when receiving unexpected texts or emails asking for personal information or payment.

More examples of common scam messages and tips for protecting yourself are available on ADOT's website at azdot.gov/scams, with resources offered in both English and Spanish.

Officials say the safest approach is simple: if you receive a message asking for payment that seems suspicious, ignore it and do not click the link.
