Resolution Copper Project Moves Forward After Federal Land Exchange

A major step forward has been taken for the long-planned Resolution Copper project near Superior after a federal land exchange was finalized earlier this year.

In March, the U.S. Forest Service and Resolution Copper completed the transfer of land needed to begin development of the mine. The exchange came after the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Ninth Circuit allowed the project to move forward.

The agreement transfers about 2,400 acres of land previously managed by the Tonto National Forest to Resolution Copper for the mine site. In return, the company transferred more than 5,400 acres of environmentally sensitive and culturally significant land to the State of Arizona.

District 5 Supervisor Jeff Serdy welcomed the development, saying the project could bring economic opportunities to communities in the Copper Corridor.

"This is fantastic news," Serdy said in a statement. "This project will bring thousands of high-quality jobs to the area and help revitalize communities in the Copper Corridor that have suffered since their mines closed years ago. Producing copper here in Pinal County is huge for Arizona and the entire U.S. economy."

The Resolution Copper project has the potential to become one of the largest copper mines in the United States. Supporters say it could help strengthen domestic supplies of copper and other critical minerals used in energy systems, infrastructure, and technology manufacturing.

Serdy toured the Resolution Copper site in 2023 to learn more about the project and its potential impact on the region.

As work moves forward, Resolution Copper is now hiring approximately 30 skilled professionals to support operations in Arizona.
