New AZ wildfire erupts near Kearny; 1 home destroyed

One home has been lost as firefighters battle a new wildfire that has triggered the evacuation of a trailer park in Kearny in Pinal County, the Arizona State Forestry Division said.

The Shipman Fire stood at 300 acres just before 9 p.m. Monday and was being fought with multiple resources, including six engines, heavy air tankers and a bulldozer, officials said.

Authorities didn't immediately know how many people were evacuated as a precaution from the Stevens Trailer Park. Overall, more than 100 residences were evacuated.

The Grand Canyon Chapter of the American Red Cross said about 25 people were at a shelter set up in the multipurpose room of Ray Elementary School early Tuesday morning.

Red Cross volunteers set up cots and blankets about 3:15 a.m. and will serve breakfast, lunch and dinner, as well as snacks, coffee and water throughout the day. Nurses and mental health volunteers will also be available.

Several air tankers have joined the race to contain the flames that were spreading through the San Pedro River bottom, but heavy smoke canceled some of the runs Monday.

A CBS 5 News viewer said huge columns of smoke were visible from a distance about 5 p.m.

Arizona Department of Transportation officials said the wildfire closed 5 miles of State Route 177 near Kearny, a town of about 3,000 people.

A command post has been set up at Ray Elementary School in Kearny, the Pinal County Sheriff's Office said.
