Veterans Day 2012 turned out to be a day that Desert Storm veteran Rodney Nix will always remember.
It marked his settling into a mobile home in a nice park on the Apache Trail that was given him by Norma and Gary Tomlinson with the intercession of Frank Page, chairman of the Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 7968’s Helping Homeless Vets Committee.
Nix, a veteran of both the U.S. Navy and the U.S. Air Force, had been homeless for quite a while, with sleeping and living accommodations being shaky. Nix’s situation had come to Page’s attention.
Page engineered the logistics to make it all work smoothly.
“It all just jelled,” he said. Page related that the Tomlinsons, members of the VFW post, came to him offering to donate the mobile, saying they wanted it to go to a homeless vet. There is now a nonprofit foundation within the VFW that can accept such donations, allowing donors a tax deduction.
This is a prime example of our motto, “Vets Helping Vets,’” emphasized Page.
