Letter to the Editor: Vote NO on 495 - Here's Why

To the Editor,

As residents of San Tan Valley, we face a critical decision in the upcoming August 5th special election regarding the proposed incorporation of our community. While the allure of "local control" may sound appealing, it is imperative that we critically examine the significant financial burdens and bureaucratic complexities that incorporation would undoubtedly bring.

Currently, San Tan Valley benefits from the services provided by Pinal County, which are funded through a broader county-wide tax base. Incorporating would mean establishing an entirely new layer of government, complete with its own elected officials, town manager, administrative staff, and departments. This is not a cost-neutral endeavor. We would be responsible for funding a new police department, road maintenance, and a host of other municipal services that are currently handled by the county. Estimates suggest that creating a new police department alone could cost $10-15 million, or more, with road maintenance adding tens of millions more.

To cover these substantial new expenses, a local sales tax would almost certainly be implemented, increasing the cost of every purchase made within our community. Additionally, property taxes could see a significant rise. We would effectively be paying for services that are currently provided, but now with a premium for a new, localized bureaucracy. This isn't about getting more for less; it's about adding a redundant and expensive layer of government.

The promise of greater local control often masks the reality of increased bureaucracy. Decisions that are currently made by county officials, who serve a wider population and have established infrastructure, would fall to a newly formed town council and administration. This can lead to inefficiencies, a learning curve, and the potential for a new set of regulations and fees that residents have not previously encountered.

Let's not burden our hard-working families and businesses with increased taxes and the overhead of a new municipal government. San Tan Valley thrives as an unincorporated community, and the costs associated with adding another layer of government far outweigh any perceived benefits. I urge all voters to consider the financial implications and vote "No" on incorporation on August 5th.

Sincerely,
Jeffrey A.Kramer
