Letter to the Editor: Voting Rights Act

Letter to the Editor: Voting Rights Act

Mr Chairman,
Congratulations to the San Tan voters who exercised their right to vote on incorporation.

Today is the 60th anniversary of signing of the Voting Rights Act that outlawed racial discrimination against citizens seeking to exercise their right to vote. A right that ensures each vote is equal.

And yet that basic right today is sadly not valued nor exercised by too many Americans, by people who don't exercise their right to self-government.

A basic civic right that is under attack not only in foreign dictatorships, but here in Texas. Where extreme Republican partisans are cynically using the overwhelming political power of the state and federal government to diminish the equal value of voters by radically gerrymandering districts solely to increase their current hold on political power.

I'm hopeful that all eligible voters wake up to this crisis that we're experiencing in Pinal County, in Arizona, in Texas and throughout our nation. A crisis characterized by a purposeful attempt at politicizing our nation's public education, public health, and our judicial system. Attacks that in fact threaten all of our institutions that are basic to our democratic constitutional republic.
As a member of a community that has in the past experienced attempts targeted to diminish my vote, I'm proud to celebrate today's 60th anniversary of the Voting Rights Act.

I encourage the Board of Supervisors to consider a proclamation affirming Pinal County's commitment to our citizens' right to vote.

Roberto Reveles read these remarks at the Pinal County Board of Supervisors meeting, Aug 6, 2025.
