Letter to the Editor: America is at war

letter-to-editor-stv

America is at war. A war accompanied by mixed messages from our national leader who suggested he was on a mission to dictate regime change in the fanatical Iran dictatorship. Publicly urging Iranians "to take back your government."

While another message declared the preemptive attack was to prevent an immediate threat from a nation whose nuclear capability, we recently were told had been "obliterated."

And yet another reason cited was that America had been forced to act because our ally Israel was planning its own pre-emptive strike against our common adversary.

Whatever the confusing reasons, one thing stands out. Our national leadership recklessly proceeded without the Constitution's declaration of war authority that resides in the Congress.

The awesome decision to take our country to war must not be left in the hands of one individual acting without the American public's approval as designed by Article I, Section 8, Clause 11:

"The Congress shall have Power . . . To declare War, grant Letters of Marque and Reprisal, and make Rules concerning Captures on Land and Water; . . ."

This week both the House and Senate are considering war powers resolutions.

I urge my fellow Arizonans to contact both Senators Kelly and Gallego and our representatives in the House of Representatives.

A telephone call to the Capitol switchboard is the most direct way to connect with them.
