Letter to the Editor: Hey Queen Creek Why Now?
Please reach out to members of the Queen Creek Town Council with your concerns regarding the impact this will have on traffic and safety in our area (email addresses listed below).
TRAFFIC ALERT: Combs lane closures Feb 10 – May 30. One lane in each direction will be maintained at all times. However, all left turn lanes from Combs onto Gantzel Road, both eastbound and westbound, are scheduled to be closed through the entirety of this project.
The utility work/sewer line improvements are to "fulfill the Town's obligation to help the community replace the reclaimed water in the Encanterra Lake System with groundwater." Without detailed information on this specific project, it seems that these improvements could be made starting at the end of May to reduce the impact on members of our community.To be clear, my concerns are strictly related to traffic impact and safety of pedestrians and drivers, and are not related to annexation, incorporation, or opinions on growth in the area. That is a separate topic.
When I inquired to a Council Member about the signs that went up this week regarding lane closures, this was the response I received:
"Following is the information I received from our Utilities team, please let me know if you need any additional information.
With Council approval, the Town plans to construct sewer line improvements along Combs Road which will start at the ALA School located west of Gantzel Road, extending to Schnepf Road. Construction will require that Combs Road between Gantzel and Kenworthy be reduced to one lane in each direction. Along the other areas of the project, lanes may shift but at least one lane in each direction will be maintained at all times. Additionally, all left turn lanes from Combs Road onto Gantzel Road, both eastbound and westbound, are scheduled to be closed through the entirety of this project .
The Town is employing four contractor crews that will begin and end work simultaneously to mitigate the effect on area traffic and to complete construction in the shortest possible amount of time, which will be approximately three months. The Town has contracted with Makpro to communicate with residents, businesses, and schools in the area to notify them of the work and to help identify alternative routing.
If the Town Council approves Consent Agenda Item 9-J on tonight's Town Council Agenda, staff will provide contractors with a notice to proceed one week from Council approval date (February 12). Construction is expected to officially begin on Monday, February 17. If approved, project completion will be required by the end of May to fulfill the Town's obligation to help the community replace the reclaimed water in the Encanterra Lake System with groundwater. The information regarding a February 10th start date was an effort to provide motorists with advance notification, should the items be approved at the February 5 Town Council meeting."

My biggest question is "why now?" What do they lose (or gain) by waiting until after Memorial Day when the snowbirds are gone and school is out? What is the urgent need to replace the Encanterra Lake with ground water that will seriously impact all residents in the area? I am by no means saying not to do the project, I don't have enough information about it. The timing just seems too detrimental to all, in an already congested area.
