Access to Birth Control Eases in San Tan Valley as Arizona Governor Implements New Rule
Residents of San Tan Valley and the broader Arizona community will now have more accessible means of obtaining birth control medication, as a result of a new rule that has come into effect. On Thursday, Governor Katie Hobbs announced that adults in Arizona can now receive self-administered birth control medication without the need for a doctor's prescription.
Eligible individuals 18 years or older will be required to complete a screening and undergo a blood pressure test to acquire hormonal and oral contraceptives. Gov. Hobbs, a Democrat, emphasized the importance of creating an inclusive environment for Arizonians, stating, "We are building an Arizona for everyone, which means ensuring people across the state have what they need to live a free and healthy life."The rule, which was executed with immediate effect, was not an abrupt decision. It materialized as a continuation of efforts that began in 2021 when Arizona Senate Bill 1082 was passed. Sponsored by then-Republican Senator Michelle Ugenti-Rita, the bill aimed at easing barriers to accessing birth control. It was subsequently signed into law by former Governor Doug Ducey. Speaking to the Senate Health and Human Services Committee, Ugenti-Rita remarked, "Having an unexpected pregnancy is a lot for women. If there's a way that they can prevent that — and that's certainly what birth control does — then I think we should increase its access."
Arizona now joins over 20 other states that have similar laws permitting pharmacists to dispense FDA-approved hormonal contraceptives without a prescription, as per the Arizona Department of Health Services.
In addition to this new rule, Gov. Hobbs has been using her executive powers to advocate for reproductive freedom. In June, she issued an executive order that effectively prevented prosecutors from pursuing charges against individuals involved with a legally obtained abortion.
Moreover, Gov. Hobbs is expected to support additional legislation next year to further secure access to birth control.
For San Tan Valley residents seeking more information on how to obtain birth control under this new rule, it is advisable to consult with a local pharmacist or healthcare provider.
