Town of San Tan Valley Sales Tax: What Businesses Need to Do

The Town of San Tan Valley's sales tax takes effect Oct. 1, 2026. Businesses operating inside the town limits charge it on their sales and report it to the Arizona Department of Revenue, which passes the town's share to the town. Those businesses also need a town business license. This page holds the rates, the fees, the dates and the steps in one place.

The tax and the town license apply only inside the town limits. To check where your business sits, enter its address on our interactive map.

The town's rate is added to the 6.7% already charged across the San Tan Valley area, which is Arizona's 5.6% plus Pinal County's 1.1%. Inside the town limits, the general rate becomes 8.95% on Oct. 1. Outside the town limits, it stays at 6.7%.

Food bought for home consumption is not taxed by the town under the Oct. 1 change. That is a separate tax with a separate start date.

Construction contracts signed before Oct. 1, 2026 may qualify for what the state calls pre-existing contract treatment. The Arizona Department of Revenue tells contractors with those contracts to contact the Town of San Tan Valley for instructions, at 520-216-5702.

The full rate schedule is on the Arizona Department of Revenue's San Tan Valley tax profile.

Who Receives the Tax

The Arizona Department of Revenue receives the tax from businesses on their TPT returns and passes the town's share to the town. The town does not receive it directly. For anything about your own account, your liability or what you owe, the state revenue department is the authority, not the town.

The Two Licenses

A business operating inside the town limits needs both of these. They are not alternatives.

The town's fee on the state tax license depends on when your business got its TPT license:

  • Already licensed for TPT as of Sept. 30, 2026: $0 for 2026.
  • First licensed for TPT between Oct. 1 and Dec. 31, 2026: $2 for 2026.
  • Every business inside the town limits, for 2027: a $2 town renewal fee.

Town staff compare the two licenses to a state vehicle registration and a city permit. One does not replace the other.

For who needs the town license, who is exempt, home-based businesses and what the application asks for, see our guide, Do You Need a Town of San Tan Valley Business License?

The Dates

  • Oct. 1, 2026: the town tax is owed on sales inside the town limits. Town business licenses can be processed, and the licenses section opens on the town's permitting portal.
  • Dec. 31, 2026: the deadline to complete the town business license process.
  • Dec. 31, 2027: any business that signs up during that early window is covered through this date.
  • Jan. 1, 2027: the town's 2.25% tax on food for home consumption starts.

If You Already Have a TPT License

The Arizona Department of Revenue says it is adding the town's code, SZ, to the TPT licenses of businesses inside the town limits, and will mail the updated licenses to the mailing address on file.

Your business owes the town tax on every sale from Oct. 1, 2026, even if the updated license has not arrived by then. Starting with periods that begin Oct. 1, your TPT returns need to include the town's SZ code.

Adding the town to your AZTaxes account is how your TPT returns pick up the town's rate. The town describes these steps to add it yourself:

1. Log in at AZTaxes.gov. You will need your e-signature PIN.

2. Open the business list page and click view in the actions column for your license.

3. Select account update.

4. Add San Tan Valley as a reporting jurisdiction on each of your business locations.

Once the town is listed, the town says the combined rate applies automatically on future TPT returns, so you do not work out the 6.7% and the 2.25% separately when you file. That update is for your returns. Charging customers the new rate at the register is a separate step, covered under Point of Sale Systems below.

The business codes for the SZ region are in the state's AZ Tax Rate Look Up. The state says the new rate will not show there until Oct. 1, 2026, so an earlier check will still show the old rate.

Point of Sale Systems

Updating your tax account and updating your register are two separate jobs. The Arizona Department of Revenue tells businesses to reprogram their point of sale systems to include the town's tax on sales from Oct. 1. Every system handles it differently, and the town does not support that setup, so ask your provider.
