FUSD Recommends DeLaTorre for Foothills Head Football Coach Position

Tuesday's Florence Unified School District not only included the board accepting Superintendent Dr Fuller's immediate resignation, but the call to the public had close to a dozen people speaking for and against San Tan Foothills' Principal Richard's decision to "force Coach Martin to resign" as head coach from the Sabercat football program.

Students who had attended Poston Butte High School when Mr Richard's was principal there, spoke in favor of his temperament and ability to include all students.  Parents, players & members of the Sabercat booster club however shared a very different story regarding Richard's decision and what a "horrible decision" Richards had made, urging the board to reinstate Coach Martin.  Martin had been approved for the head coach position, by the board July 1, 2016 taking over for Coach Sanders, who coached one year as well.

While Board President Gunther made it clear that no one from the board was allowed to respond to any comments or questions during the call to the public, it appears that the urgent request for Martin's reinstatement was too late.  The following day, the Florence Unified School District sent out a press release recommending George DeLaTorre for the head football coach position.  The district's release is below.

Geroge DeLaTorre will be recommended to the Florence Unified School District School Board for the position of Head Varsity Football Coach at San Tan Foothills High School. Pending board approval, Mr. DeLaTorre will bring his 41 years of coaching experience to Foothills. He will replace 1st year head coach Ritchie Martin who resigned in February.

Coach DeLaTorre is a member of the Mesa School’s Hall of Fame and was a part of 4 state championship football coaching staffs. He served as the head football coach at Florence High School for four years, earning three trips to the state semi-finals during that time.

As the Head Football Coach at South Mountain High School, his teams reached the Semi-State Finals two years in a row and Coach DeLaTorre was selected as 5A Coach of the Year by the Arizona Football Coaches Association, the Phoenix Metro Football Coach of the Year, and Channel 12 Friday Night Fever’s Big School Coach of the Year. He was also recognized nationally as the 2007 Coach of the Year in Arizona by the National Football League and the Arizona Cardinals.

Coach DeLaTorre Quote: “My priority in the football program would be in developing an emotional infrastructure that emphasizes a culture of accountability rather than relying on a student athlete’s naturalability. I want our kids to be competitive in the classroom, the field of play and their future with faith, family and careers. We want them to expect challenges and manage human vulnerability and the emotional inconveniences that they will experience as life-long learners in a rapidly changing global environment.

Mr. Knutsen Quote: “The Florence Unified School District is committed to excellence on and off the field of play and most importantly, in the classroom. Coach George DeLaTorre has a proven track record of winning on the field while developing connections with students and families off the field. We are grateful to have Coach DeLaTorre, pending board approval, join our staff to help our student-athletes succeed.

San Tan Foothills Sabercats finished the season 6-3.
